A few years ago, fourth grade teachers in Luverne began to use a program called "Accelerated Reading." Allowing students to work at their own pace and rewarding them for reaching their goals, the program is motivating for all students, regardless of their reading level. As the program has expanded, comptuer software has been updated and currently all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are able to participate in this exciting program. The program is now the central focus of the reading curriculum in these grades.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized reading incentive and management program that provides information about each student's reading. Using a combined system of vocabulary level, length of the book and level of difficulty, the book is assigned a reading level. Points are awarded when reading tests are successfully completed by the student. A student receives the full point value for 100% and the points decrease as the correct number of questions answered decreases.
The program is designed, in part, for students to increase their reading practice by reading more and better books. It gives teachers a precise, effortless record of how much and how well each student is doing. To use the Accelerated Reader, a student reads a book from the program's booklist, then tests his or her knowledge and comprehension by answering multiple-choice questions. The computer handles all scoring and record-keeping automatically, achieving closure by immediately presenting the student with a score.
