Annual Order Form

Publications Policy and Code of Ethics

In the production of the LHS Yearbook and The Echo, we are striving not only for excellence, but also perfection.  We are working toward the goal of providing equality throughout the annual to every group and student at LHS.  We will do our best to produce a yearbook and newspaper that are interesting, journalistically correct, and cover a wide variety of subjects.  We will make it fair to all and statistically accurate.

Illegal Material Policy:
Illegal material will not be published, including libelous statements and obscenities.
1)  Any illegal, libelous, or obscene materials submitted will be reported to the administration.
2)  The offending statements and/or materials will not be published.
3)  Students in class submitting such materials will be subject to disciplinary action at the discretion of Ms. Sahly and Mrs. Judson.

Inappropriate and obscene policy:

1)  The photography editor and advisor will make the final decision on what pictures are and are not appropriate for each publication.
2)  The maker of the page, editors, and advisor will decide what language is appropriate for each publication.  No obscenities will be allowed.

Examples of what is not allowed include swearing, nudity, exposed underwear, pictures of lusting or obscene behavior, and inappropriate clothing.

Editing Policy:
Editors should meet with the writers of a page before removing anything so that the writers have input and understand the editors' reasoning.  Ms. Sahly, the chief editors, and the administration have the final say.

Correction Policy:
If there is any error in the Echo, we will correct the mistake in the same section in the next issue.  Yearbook corrections will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.  If the editing committee does not make proper corrections, the members of that committee may lose points on their grade.

Advertising Policy:
To help finance the yearbook and the Echo, the staff sells newspaper advertising at a rate of $1.50 per column inch.  Advertising follows the same scrutiny as all other material we publish.

Obituary Policy:
In the event that a member of the faculty or student body at LHS should pass away, their death will be treated respectfully within the yearbook and newspaper.  In the case of student death, the parent or guardian's permission will be needed for publication.

1)  A page will be dedicated to the deceased and placed at the beginning of their grade's head and shoulders pictures, or at the beginning of the faculty pages in case of faculty death.
2)  The page will include a short obituary, lists of school activities, family members, a photo, birth and death dates, and cause of death if appropriate.
3)  Any other information that is pertinent and substantial will be included.

In case of multiple deaths in a school year, half pages will be used for each deceased person if the number exceeds five.

No Picture Policy:
When pictures are not provided for a student, we will have a list of names with no photos at the end of each grade section.

1)  Pictures will be listed with last names first, followed by first names.
2)  Substitutions will not be made for underclassmen in place of their school-provided picture.
3)  Wallet-sized photos will be collected from the seniors for the senior pages.  The deadline for the senior students to submit their pictures will be at the end of the first week after Christmas break.

Buying Policy:
Everyone who buys a yearbook will get a receipt for their purchase, saying if they have paid in full or half.  They should keep their receipts in case of staff errors.  If they lose their receipts, the annual staff will keep a second copy.

Letters to the Editor:
The following is the policy for the Echo publication of letters to the editor:

1)  Each letter must be signed with the actual name of its author.  Anonymous or mislabeled letters will not be printed.
2)  Not all submitted letters may be used.  Letters will be printed at the discretion of the editors.
3)  Letters will be published as is, unless subject matter is deemed inappropriate.
4)  To submit letters, address to the Echo editors and leave on them on the message board.

Creative Writing Page:
The Echo will contain a monthly creative writing page with submissions by students, as long as student contributions continue enough to support it.  Submissions must contain the name of the author and should be placed in the labeled box in the advisor's room.  All contributions will be read by the editors, who will make all publications decisions.  Contributions will not be edited or changed, but not all contributions will necessarily be published.
